Mercedes-Benz Championship January 3rd-6th

golf.jpg

While the rest of the world is freezing their tails off in the Eastern part of America, the best golfers in the world will be in Hawaii at the beautiful Kapalua resort. It’s hard to imagine how the players stay focused with the temperature being perfect, and the sights and sounds being so beautiful. But, I believe that defending champion Vijay Singh will be more than up for the challenge of defending his title.

The Mercedez-Benz championship got it’s start in another warm city, Las Vegas in the year 1953. In 1968 it moved to California for 30 years, before finding it’s home in Hawaii, where they are happy to have them.

When you think of any tournament, in recent times, you usually would think Tiger Woods has the most wins, but that isn’t the case with this tournament. While Woods has won it twice, fellow American Stuart Applebee has won it three times, all in a row from 2003 to 2006. All of the names wrote up until this point are expected to play, included all the other big names. After all, who can pass up on Hawaii? The all-time winner of the event is none other than the Golden Bear himself Jack Nicklaus.

Last year Singh took home a cool 1.1 million dollars, and that’s right around what the winner will be making this year.

What’s unique about this tournament is that you can only play in it if you won a tournament on the PGA tour the preceding year. That means only 34 people are invited to this tournament, and that’s why almost all the members of the field are names you’ve heard of.

The course itself is beautiful and offers some of the most breathtaking views anywhere in the world. It’s a par 73 course, and 7,411 yards long. The course designers were Ben Crenshaw and Bill Corre, and they obviously took the time to make sure every step of the course was one beautiful view after another.

While we are sitting by the fireplace back at our homes, let’s not try to be too jealous as the best golfers in the world make their attempt at taking home the over one million dollar prize.

107th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country

us-open.bmp

So its finally that time of the year again the second Major of the year, none other than the United States Open, which is being played at Oakmont Country in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Few venues in the world of golf have the championship tradition of Oakmont. Introduced in 1903 by designer Henry Fownes, Oakmont Country Club has hosted more major Championships than any other course in the U.S., including seven United States Opens, five U.S. Amateurs, three PGA Championships, and one U.S. Women’s Open. Oakmont remains perhaps the most difficult course in North America, with 180 deep bunkers (personified by the Church Pews), hard and slick greens that slope away from the player, and tight fairways requiring the utmost precision. Oakmont was the site of “the greatest round of the 20th century”: Johnny Miller’s final round 63 at the 1973 U.S. Open. Golf Digest ranks Oakmont #5 in its most recent version of America’s Top 100 courses.

ogilvy.bmp Will last years winner Geoff Ogilvy the Aussie repeat his most glorious moment by defending his Crown from last year! The back to back Champions has been done 6 players only last one to pull this of was Curtis Strange in 1988-1989. The first one was Willie Anderson in 1903-1904, then it was John McDermott in 1911-1912, Bobby Jones in 1929-1930, Ralph Guldahl 1937-1938 then by my all time golfing hero Mr. Ben Hogan in 1950-1951. So if this young Aussie plans to join the ranks of those players then he better pray to the golfing Gods and show up with his A game. This is the 8th time that the open is being held here at Oakmont, it first hosted the Open in 1927 then 1935,1953,1962,1973,1983 and last time around it was in 1994 when we saw a three man play off between Ernie Els, Loren Roberts and Colin Montgomerie. That time it was the young South African’s turn to shine and he sure did.

This years Open is also some what special to a close friend of mine and I’m sure that the golfing world will be paying a close attention to his play from now on, yes Im talking about Pablo Benavides Martin. This young talented player has turned Pro and there for leaving the mighty Cowboys at Oklahoma State, the ones that have seen his talent can all say that it was simply a matter of time. Last week he made is Professional deput with an invitation to the St. Jude Championship he failed to make the cut by a single shot which to me just says its all a learning curve thats all. He has qualified for this years Open by going through Local and Regional qualifiers and has been paired with none other than two of his countrymen. He will play in the comfort of Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia and I’m sure that these three will find a way to make themselves feel comfortable and relaxed! So I won’t be shocked if we see these three fine players doing well.

Pablo is coming of what has been a good overall College Career but many expected him to do better. Martin repeated as the Big 12 Player of the Year and was tabbed as an honorable mention All-American in 2007. He was also named one of three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award, honoring the nation’s top collegiate player. The Malaga, Spain native posted his fifth career victory with his win at the Big 12 Championship in April and tallied three other top 10s during the season. Martin also made history this spring when he became the first amateur to win a European PGA Tour event, winning the Estoril Open de Portugal.

To summerize this years Open I’m sure the scores will be High some players are calling for the Winner to finnish at 10 over par for the week others are saying semilar to last year, but we will have to wait and see just how frustrating the USGA wants to make it for the players this year. The rough is brutal and the greens are already so firm and fast that the USGA had to water them down already, if this is a sign of things to come then we can expect the worse. Might turn out to be a Mickey Mouse Style tournament more like PUtt Putt, all we need are the laughing clowns out there too. The tall grass and rough is in some places so horrible that players are not even able to located their golf balls, so that makes me wonder is it too tough especially when one thinks that there is a par 3 that they can make as long as 288 yards from the back tee. If that is the case then we are going to be seeing players hitting drivers on a par 3 and still not getting there, could this lead to players laying up shot and hoping for a good pitch and pray to make the putt for par ?????

But one thing is for sure, I know I can’t wait for all this to start on Thursday. If you want to find me just look for the nearest TV that is showing the Golf I’ll be there glued to the TV as much as I can.

Tiger again! And with fury

ppgtour.bmp So this Sunday 1st of October, Mr. Woods once again made another statement in regards to his golf game and how much better he is than everyone else. Having the chance to get to watch most of the coverage for the four days, I can say what blew my mind the most was not Tiger winning by 8 strokes, yes thats right he won by 8 strokes. What really got my attention was him after playing the par 5 18th four times he has managed to eagle it not only on day one, but day two and also on day three. On Sunday he decided to two putt for a birdie, that means he played the hole for the four days a total of seven under par.

It looks like Tiger had some steam to let out that was burning him on the inside from the Ryder Cup. Not only did Tiger show us why he is the number one ranked player in the world but that there is no one even close to being as good as him. When Tiger is on his game there is no one and I say no one that can beat him, or even come close to beating him. When he is at 100% he makes everyone look like they are just playing for fun and trying to see whom gets second place. This year alone Tiger has nearly racked up $10 million in winnings, the season is coming to an end again and there is no second guessing whom will be voted player of the year again!!

Golf Legend Byron Nelson dies at 94

byron-nelson.jpg The golf legend Bryon Nelson died at 94 on September 26th, 2006. Known as golf’s elegant ‘Lord Bryon’ whos eleven consecutive victories in 1945 stand and probably always will as one of sports most amazing records. Not only did he manage to win eleven consecutive tournaments that year he was able to rack up a total of 18 wins for the year, something that no golf has ever even come close to dreaming of. Lord Bryon was known for his graceful swing and his gentle manner, I think if we say that he had the greatest year in professional golf history in 1945 with his 18 wins, I think that falls short there are no words that I can think of that will describe that year other than one of a kind.

His legend will always live on thanks to the PGATOUR that every years hosts the EDS Bryon Nelson Championship, that is played every May at the Four Seasons Resort and Club of Las Colinas of Irwing, Texas. This tournament always brings out a strong field not for the prize money, but simply to pay respect to one of the all time greats in golf history. That will no longer be the case next year, because Lord Byron won’t be sitting at the 18th green watching the players finnish, but one has to wonder if next years tournament will draw an ever stronger field to show their respect for a legend!

Tiger Woods is Human After all!!!

Tiger Having Trouble with the Putter So being a GolfNut myself and having enjoyed working in the golf industry in the past, I was starting to think that good ol Mr. Woods was no longer human, and that there was no way he was going to be stopped. But this week we are at Wentworth Club In England for the HSBC World Match Play, by all means Tiger was not only maybe the crowd favorite over Luke Donald, but by all sport writers and fellow golfers both amateur and pros around the globe.

But today I came to work a little early and to my shock I saw that there were a few upsets on day one, Paul Casey beat Retief Goosen, Robert Karlsson beat Jim Furyk who just came of the great win at the Canadian Open last week. Mike Weir beat Adam Scott, Angel Cabrera beat Ernie Els, it was interesting to see two European Ryder Cuppers doing well, but the shock of the year was the PGA Champion of 2003 Shaun Micheel beating the number one player in the World, Mr. Tiger Woods. Not just the best player right now, but probably the greatest golfer that has even walked on this planet.

It seems that today Tiger was having a few issues with the club that normally does all the talking for him, yes I am talking about his flat stick the putter, the one we have gotten used to seeing allowing him to pick up another check and trophy on Sunday.

Round two will start bright an early tomorrow again since they are playing in the United Kingdom, here are the matches for tomorrow for the HSBC World Match Play for all those crazy golfnuts out there that want to keep an eye on the scores one can goto European Tour

Now its a good question on whom is going to win the tournament, I personally like Mike Weir and Colin Montgomerie, but whom knows maybe Robert Karlsson will ride his high from making the Ryder Cup squad for the first time. I will keep yall updated as the tournament continues.
