NBA Week 8th Picks: Cleveland at Denver

Forward/center Anderson Varejao found himself in an unusual position the past two games—the starting lineup.
The 6-foot-11, 260-pounder had started 23 games in his career before getting the nod on Friday against Philadelphia. It was his first start of the season, and he was back on the floor for the start of Saturday’s game at Atlanta.
In his two games as starter, Varejao has averaged 14 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.0 block. He has also shot 60 percent from the field (12-for-20).
Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas is expected to miss at least a week after he sprained his left ankle. The Cavs are unsure on Ilgauskas’ timetable, but they probably won’t rush him back.
Hawks 97, Cavaliers 92:   Atlanta stopped Cleveland’s 11-game winning streak on Saturday at Philips Arena.
It was the fifth time in Cavs history they had won 11 games in a row. On each occasion, they lost the next game.

NBA 2008 Week 3 Picks: Detroit Pistons vs. LA Lakers

Being this case a pretty interesting one as we have the Lakers rank #1 with a 6 wins during this season and on the other side of the court the #6 ranked Pistons lead by the amazing Allen Iverson. However, Lakers coach Phil Jackson and his key player Kobe Bryant will keep it tough for the Pistons to give them there first loss of the season.

NBA Thursday Detroit Pistons vs. San Antonio Spurs

In the eyes of many NBA pundits this game could be a preview of the NBA Finals (Sorry Celtics fans, but we must remember the Pistons did just beat you guys at home.). As of this writing, the Detroit Pistons have won ten games in a row. The Spurs have also generated one of the best records in the stacked western division. The television ratings are down in the NBA, but it’s my guess that they will see at least a one night spike as two of the best teams from their respective division over the last half decade square off in a meaningful game that will answer a lot of questions about both teams.

When you think of the Spurs you automatically think of Tim Duncan, but it is Tony Parker that is leading the team in points this year, with 20.3 a contest. Parker also leads him team with 6.7 assists a contest. That isn’t to say Duncan is losing a step, he does still lead his team with over ten rebounds a game, but he has other options this year. The “rest” he is getting now could spell trouble for opposing forwards and centers in the playoffs.

As noted, the Pistons are playing well, but it’s always tough to play the Spurs at home, where they have only lost twice this year. Because Detroit is on a roll I think they will hang in to the final buzzer, only to lose by a point or two.

NBA Friday Detroit vs. Toronto

The Detroit Pistons have shown that they are still a team to be reckoned with. A couple of weeks ago they defeated the Boston Celtics, at the Garden, feeding them a nice big slice of humble pie. With that, the Pistons have been accused of only stepping up to the plate when something important is on the line, such as their pride. A game in Toronto might not motivate them as much as say a game in Boston. However, the Pistons say their time will come in the playoffs. With a team that’s been together so long, you are inclined to believe them. After all they’ve routinely been in the eastern conference finals, and won a title, in the last half decade.

Toronto made waves last year by playing well, and even making the playoffs. They also have one of the best players that many have not really even heard of, Chris Bosh. Bosh has been offered more lucrative contracts to play in bigger American cities, but he says the Toronto lifestyle suits him just fine, and that he wants to make them a contender as opposed to just going to another team. Bosh is nearly averaging a double-double with 20.4 points and 9.2 rebounds a contest.

I will favor Billups in company in this one. They have high expectations to live up to now that they have beaten the Celtics. Also, the Pistons have a better road record then Toronto has home record, which could spell trouble for the Raptors.

Thanksgiving Day NFL: (8-1) Green Bay at (6-3) Detroit Lions

For as long as anyone can remember the Detroit Lions have been playing football on Thanksgiving day. It’s always nice to know that after you are done eating, or waiting for the food to be made, that you can go sit on the couch and watch football. Unfortunately for the Lions people were usually watching them just because it was a football game on a day off, not because of the success of their team. This year they are actually competing for a playoff spot and they are playing the 8-1 Green Bay Packers. Of the three NFL games on Turkey day this year this looks to be the one that will take the cake, or in this cake, the pumpkin pie.

The Detroit Lions are coming off a 31-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The Lions are still on pace to reach the 10 wins that Jon Kitna has predicted, but the real meat of the season starts now. Kitna has gotten off to a great start, leading the offensive minded Lions as quarterback. He has thrown for over 2200 yards and is on pace to throw over 4000 on the year. He has passed for 12 touchdowns with eight interceptions. His favorite target has been Roy Williams who has caught 49 passes with five touchdowns. Earlier in the season they were worried that they couldn’t run the ball too well, but running back Kevin Jones has came alive as of late, averaging 4.1 yards per carry and has scattered to the end zone five times.

When you think of the Green Bay Packers you think of one name. Brett Favre. Favre detractors had suggested that he was passed it, and he should have retired two years ago. Favre is proving the naysayer’s wrong. 2700 yards into the season, including 16 touchdown passes, has made the same people say he should have retired yelling that he could play for a few more years. Funny how things change. One thing that has changed constantly this season is the running back for the Packers. Injuries, and just trying to find the best fit, has seen more than a handful of players running the ball for the Packers. As of late rookie Ryan Grant has emerged as the top threat. In two out of the last three games he has ran for over 100 yards. This came after seeing the ball sparingly the first few games of the season.

Brett Favre has always had some trouble playing in Detroit, and this year the team is better than the teams he’s used to. The team will be pumped because for the first time in years the Lions and their fans have a team they can be proud of. I know the Packers are 8-1 and enjoying a great season, but I’m taking the Lions in this one in a mini-upset. 34-27 seems about right to me.

NBA Friday: (5-1) Detroit Pistons at (3-2) LA Lakers

lakers.jpg

The LA Lakers have gotten off to a decent start, which is more than some expected of them. Many think that if the Lakers are even to make the playoffs The LA Lakers have gotten off to a decent start, which is more than some expected of them. Many think that if the Lakers are even to make the playoffs this season it will be a miracle. But, don’t tell that to Kobe Bryant. Bryant is averaging over 30 points per game, and is also leading the team in assists, with five a game, showing he’s more than just a point scorer. Power forward Lamar Odom is averaging 10 rebounds a game as well, so Kobe is getting a little help from his supporting cast. He’ll need all the help from his teammates at the one loss Pistons will come to town on Friday. The Pistons one loss came as a bit of a surprise to the one win Bulls, but they have rebounded well. The Pistons are once again playing very solid defense, out scoring their opponents by over 60 points on the season. Richard Hamilton is scoring 20 points per game to lead the offense. Hamilton is usually known as a second option, but has stepped up this year, as his teammates start to show a little sign of wearing down after more than a few years of NBA service. This game will be the fourth of five west coast games for the Pistons, so wear and tear might start to be an issue here. I think I will take the Bryant and the Lakers in a mini-upset.

NBA Thursday: Detroit at Miami

With the East so wide open this game could be an early feature of two teams that could make some noise in the conference. The Detroit Pistons are still looking like one of the top defensive units in the league, but they are also starting to get a little up there in age. Power Forward Rasheed Wallace is entering his 12th NBA season, and will be counted on to score a little more than usual. Wallace, while known for his ability to earn technical fouls is actually more known for his willingness to take a lesser roll so his teammates can shine. Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton are also back. Both of them are largely considered to be two of the most underrated players in the league.

The Miami Heat will have to start the season without superstar Dwayne Wade. It is unknown when Wade will return from his shoulder injury, but stepping into his starting position will be NBA vet Ricky Davis. With the absence of Wade, this means that the aging Shaquille O’Neal will have to step up his production. If they could also get some production from bench players such as Penny Hardaway and Smush Parker, it will give some relief to the Heat as they wait to get healthy.

It’s hard to predict NBA games so early, but with the injuries to the Heat, I feel the Pistons will win this one even though they are playing in Miami.

NFL Sunday Game of the Week: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2) vs. Detroit Lions (3-2)

After last weeks undefeated match-up between the New England Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys, no games appear on the schedule that can live up to the hype this week. The Patriots are playing the winless Miami Dolphins, while the Cowboys, now with one loss, take on the 2-3 Vikings. One surprising game though could be between the Buccaneers and the Lions. Both teams were not expected to have an above .500 record by this point of the season. It also features one of the best defenses right now in Tampa Bay, and a high powered offensive attack led by Jon Kitna in the Lions.

Detroit opened the season winning two games, before being shellacked by the Philadelphia Eagles 56-21. They quickly rebounded, defeating Chicago, putting 37 points on a team that usually has a very good defense. Once again though, in their next outing they took a pounding, losing 34-3 to the also improved Washington Redskins. In able to pull themselves out of this mini-slump they are enduring they will have to rely on the arm of Kitna. On they year he has completed 68.3 percent of his passes, and has thrown for 1333 yards on eight touchdowns and six interceptions. In his games he has either been superb, or non-existent. The Lions would probably prefer a balanced effort the rest of the way, but when he blows up on opposing offenses it is fun to watch. Kitna has some of the best receivers in the game to throw to, including Roy Williams and Shaun McDonald. Williams is averaging 14.6 yards per catch, and has found the end zone four times. McDonald has also scored four times. Their rookie superstar Calvin Johnson started off hot, but has battled back injuries of late. Coming off a bye week he should be ready to make an impact.

The Tampa Buccaneers are all about their defense. Their offensive line and main running back threat Cadillac Williams are both injured. They have relied on Jeff Garcia to limit his mistakes as much as possible, even though it obvious to everyone in the stands they will have to now throw the ball more because of the injuries. The addition of Barrett Ruud has been a lifesaver for the Bucs. He leads the team with 62 tackles. He is also tied with the ageless Derrick Brooks with three forced fumbles. Jermaine Phillips has also contributed with 39 tackles of his own, including two interceptions. Everyone keeps saying the Tampa Bay defense is old. Someone forget to tell them.

This is a very close game on paper because of the prolific offense vs. the stingy defense. Detroit has shown they have had problems with good secondary’s, as they only put up three points against the Redskins. I like the Buccaneers in this one as long as they can get a little more offensive production then they are used to. I’m thinking a score of 21-17 looks about right.
