NFL Week 9 PicksNew England Patriots vs. Indianapolis Colts

Just last year this would have probably been hailed as game of the year.  However, it’s amazing how fast things can change in a year.  The Colts, 3-4 will entire the month of November with a below .500 record for the first time under head coach Tony Dungy.  They have looked pedestrian at best, and they are coming off one of their worse losses of the year, a 31-21 loss to the 7-0 Titans, a game where the final score made it seem closer than it was.  There are rumors that Peyton Manning’s knee is bothering him, and/or that it hasn’t fully recovered since the offseason surgery he had, which prevented him from playing a single down during the preseason.  At least the Colts have their quarterback, as Tom Brady continues to watch from the sidelines, as he will the rest of the year.

NFL 2008 Week 8 Picks: Indianapolis Colts vs. Tennessee Titans.

At the beginning of the season if you had to pick which one of these two teams had the better record, you would have probably picked the Peyton Manning led colts.  Also, if you had to pick a team that would still be undefeated at this point, the Tennessee Titans would probably be near the bottom of your list.  Welcome to a crazy season of NFL football.  The Tennessee Titans season started off weird enough, when their quarterback Vince Young started the season playing poorly, and then hurt his knee, and is now relegated to the number two quarterback.  Their starting quarterback is someone that most people didn’t even know that was still in the league, Kerry Collins.  The last Collins sighting was when he was in a New York uniform leading his team to the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.  Honestly, who was surprised he was still in the league, feel free to answer in the comment section below.  Anyway, despite all these “problems” the Titans defense has remained intact, leading the team to that previously mentioned undefeated start.

NFL Sunday Game of the Week . (8-3) Jacksonville Jaguars vs. (9-2) Indianapolis Colts

It might seem odd, but there are more than a few people out there that think that the Colts having two losses by this point of the season is somewhat of a surprise. On the other hand, those same people may seem it’s a shock that the Jacksonville Jaguars find themselves playing the Colts for first place in the AFC south. The Colts unexpected loss came against the San Diego Chargers one week after giving up a fourth quarter lead against their rivals, the New England Patriots. Maybe losing to the Chargers shouldn’t be such a shock, despite San Diego sliding down this year, but it was the way they lost. It featured a number you will most likely ever seen again: Peyton Manning: 6 interceptions. Because of that stat Manning’s numbers look a little low this year (19 TD’s, 12 Int’s) but he is still on pace to throw for over 4000 yards, generally a benchmark of a good season. However, his 89 passer rating is five points below his career average, and even more below the rating he has had the last few seasons. Because of that, the Colts will actually have important games down the stretch, something they haven’t been used to since they began to dominate the AFC south a few years ago.

When healthy, David Garrard is showing he is a more than formidable NFL quarterback. In his eight starts he has generated a 6-2 record while compiling a quarterback rating of over 103, a stat comparable to other top quarterbacks like Tony Romo and his opponent this week, Peyton Manning. While he has only thrown nine touchdowns this year he has thrown no interceptions in his 209 passing attempts, an amazing stat in the NFL. His goal on the team seems to be to limit mistakes while handing off to one of the best running back duos of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. Fred Taylor has ran for over 700 yards with two touchdowns, while Jones-Drew has found the end zone seven times while running for a little under 600 yards. Both running backs are averaging over 4.5 yards per carry, a stat that will win your team a lot of ball games. Neither player is really considered the featured back, but Fred Talyor is enjoying one of his best years in a while because of past injury problems. The undersized Jones-Drew is a very exciting player to watch. He has also gained a reputation for his blocking skills, despite being undersized in every which way.

With Indy being a bit undermanned due to injury, this could be a close ball game. However, it is very hard for me to go against Manning in his home stadium. I believe the Colts will take this one by a slim margin, something like 27-24. That’s if Adam Vinatieri can start knocking down some field goals.

Thanksgiving Day NFL: (7-2) Indianapolis Colts vs. (3-6) Atlanta Falcons

The final NFL game on turkey day features the defending Super Bowl champions the Indianapolis Colts on the road against the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons will either come into this game the loser of an unprecedented three games in a row, or the winner of one in a row. The Colts, for the first time in a long time, lost back to back games to the Patriots and the Chargers. They are also dealing with a whole slew of injuries that have left many wondering if the Colts will even be able to make a serious run at defending their championship status.

Peyton Manning threw a career high six interceptions in the Colts loss to the Chargers, so his numbers may seem a little skewed. Many people would be pretty shocked if Manning ever comes close to those marks again. In fact, he is one of the better quarterbacks when it comes to rebounding after a bad game. He has passed for 16 touchdowns, and is on pace for yet another season over 4000 yards passing. The injury that may hurt the team the most is that of their biggest defensive star, Dwight Freeney. On November 14th, it was announced he would be placed on the season ending injury list because of his foot. Other star players that are dealing with injuries are multiple time Pro Bowler Marvin Harrison, top tight end Dallas Clark, and emerging wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez.

The Atlanta Falcons will enter this game in the exact opposite fashion of the Colts. They will either be on a three game winning streak or on a one game slide. The Falcons have had an interesting season. They entered it knowing that their superstar Michael Vick would be unable to join them because of his ongoing legal troubles. But, they have played tough in nearly every game, including winning some games they weren’t expected to win. One of those wins was last week, against the Carolina Panthers. Interestingly enough, the quarterback who led his team to the last two victories, Joey Harrington, is being rumored to be replaced by Byron Leftwich, a move Harrington said he finds shocking. It should come as a bit of a shock, because Harrington has been playing well lately. We will see how this plays out over the next couple of weeks. Because of this quarterback merry go round it’s hard to guess who will be leading the team on Thanksgiving Day.

This should appear as an easy victory for the Colts, but the Falcons are getting their shot at them at the right time. The Colts are struggling a bit, and the birds get to play them at home. With all of that I still think Peyton Manning and company finds away to get past Atlanta in a closer than expected game. I’m thinking something like 31-27.
