NBA Week 8th Picks: Cleveland at Denver

Forward/center Anderson Varejao found himself in an unusual position the past two games—the starting lineup.
The 6-foot-11, 260-pounder had started 23 games in his career before getting the nod on Friday against Philadelphia. It was his first start of the season, and he was back on the floor for the start of Saturday’s game at Atlanta.
In his two games as starter, Varejao has averaged 14 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.0 block. He has also shot 60 percent from the field (12-for-20).
Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas is expected to miss at least a week after he sprained his left ankle. The Cavs are unsure on Ilgauskas’ timetable, but they probably won’t rush him back.
Hawks 97, Cavaliers 92:   Atlanta stopped Cleveland’s 11-game winning streak on Saturday at Philips Arena.
It was the fifth time in Cavs history they had won 11 games in a row. On each occasion, they lost the next game.

NFL 2008 Week 3 Picks: Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers

A battle of undefeated NFC rivals will take place when the Dallas Cowboys travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers.  The Dallas Cowboys were expected to start off the year well, and continue it with a great run into the playoffs, but the Green Bay Packers weren’t quite sure they were heading after Brett Favre first retired, and then eventually became a member of the New York Jets.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has stepped in well, and while he may never fill the shoes of the great Green Bay legend, he is certainly on his way to making his own shoes.  Rodgers has been great, completing 40 of 62 of his passes for four touchdowns and no interceptions.

NBA Thursday Picks: Cleveland Cavaliers at Houston Rockets

basketball2.jpg

Two teams with nearly identical records, but playing in different conferences, will square off Thursday to see who the best among them is. The Cavaliers ride into this game with Lebron James and his over 30 points a game. After a slower than anticipated start the Cavs are starting to look like the team that made it all the way to the NBA Finals a season ago. They are on a roll, winning eight out of their last ten ballgames. They did take a tough break a couple of games ago when Anderson Varejao went down four 4-6 weeks with a hurt ankle, but the rest of the gain should be able to keep them more than afloat until he returns, although his return will be welcomed. A high energy guy like Varejao is always appreciated on any team looking to make a run deep into the playoffs.

NBA Thursday: Cleveland at San Antonio

The Cleveland Cavaliers are playing much better now that they have the majority of their team intact, but how will that translate against the defending NBA champions and winners of all by two home games? As of this writing, the Cavs have won seven of ten games. LeBron James leads the league in scoring with 29 points a contest. He also leads his team in assists with 7.5 and also averages nearly the same amount of rebounds a game, a true “jack of all trades.” When LeBron James was injured earlier in the season he told the league to enjoy getting their victories against them now, because when the team is back together things will be different. This will be their chance to prove that now.

The Spurs are actually suffering a little of that same bad luck the Cavs had with injuries. Manu Ginobili is out and Tim Duncan, the perennial all-star, is listed as day to day. Without his two best teammates, Tony Parker, who leads his team with 20 points a game, will have to find even more ways to contribute to his team. The Spurs are filled with a bunch of solid vets, but it’s hard to say if any of those will be able to step up after playing second fiddle for so long.

With Bruce Bowen guarding James you may be able to keep the scoring down a bit, but with missing the other big guns you might be outdone. With the game being in San Antonio it does even things out a bit, but I feel the Cavs might be able to pull off a semi-upset here.

NBA Basketball Thursday: LA Lakers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers may have a record to scoff at during this present time, but just recently they got their entire team back together. Lebron James and Larry Hughes have both missed time due to injuries this year, but as James told the NBA earlier in the year, have fun getting your wins now, because we’ll be back soon enough. They get to test that theory when Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers come to town.

Bryant is second to James in scoring with 27.2 points per game. He also leads the team with 5.1 assists per contest. He has severely lacked help since Shaquille O’Neal left the team a few years ago, after all, those are huge shoes to fill. Andrew Bynum has stepped up lately; averaging nearly ten rebounds a game, but it’s not nearly enough to expect the Lakers to make any kind of serious post season run.

Despite the poor start, it appears the Cavaliers will be able to turn things around. As stated, they are getting healthy, which leads one to believe they can perhaps make it to another NBA Finals. The problem with them is that they also lack much of a supporting cast, and if they were in the West, they’d probably be about where the Lakers are, which is seventh or eight place per season. With the Cavs’ back at full strength I favor them in a close ball game in this one, probably by five points or less.

NFL Sunday Game of the Week: (5-5) Houston Texans at (6-4) Cleveland Browns

There aren’t really any exceptional games this coming Sunday, but there is one featuring two teams that are enjoying some success after years of usually toiling near the bottom of the division. For the Houston Texans it could be a bit expected because they are still coming into their own after being named an expansion team a few years ago. They are at .500 but unfortunately they play in the stacked AFC South division that is ruled by the defending Super Bowl champs, the Indianapolis Colts. But, despite being in last place of their division, they are only two games out of a wildcard playoffs position. Leading the team in their recent success is long time Atlanta Falcon backup, Matt Schaub. After starting the season hot he cooled down a bit during a bit of a losing streak. But after missing a game due to injury and a bye week he returned with a bang against the New Orleans Saints this past Sunday. He completed 21 of 33 passes for two touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 112.3. If this is a return to form with the way he played early in the season then their playoff push begins now.

The Browns are playing fabulous, and are no longer the laughing stock of the league. They have won three out of their last four games, including a 33-30 OT victory over Ravens this past Sunday. They owe a lot of their success to one of the biggest surprises of the year, Derek Anderson. He has thrown for 20 touchdowns with just nine interceptions and a respectable rating of 90.7. Also enjoying a career resurgence is Jamal Lewis. After doing time in jail for a college drug offense two seasons ago, many felt he had hit the end of the line. Lewis is averaging four yards per carry, and is also being relied on heavily on the goal line because of his immense size. For the season, Lewis has scored six times.

Like I said, this isn’t an elite game, but it could still be fun. I believe the Browns are on a bit of a roll lately, so I’m going to pick them in a close one, 24-20
