AFC Divisional Playoffs: Jacksonville vs. New England

The Jacksonville Jaguars advanced to the divisional playoffs with a 31-29 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh. As a reward, after such a hard fought battle, they get to take on the undefeated, and rested, New England Patriots. While the New England Patriots have looked beatable the majority of the last part of the year, they have continued to find ways to win, and are still the overwhelming odds on favorite of sweeping the post season and holding up the Lombardi trophy the first Sunday in February.

Jaguars quarterback David Garrard managed to get through the entire regular season throwing just three interceptions, but he nearly matched his total with two in the victory of the Steelers. He finished that game just 9 for 20 with 140 yards passing and a touchdown. It was the play of running backs Fred Taylor, and Maurice Jones-Drew who ultimately led them over the hurdle, combining for three touchdowns. It is Taylor who has been shunned by Pro Bowl voters every year he’s been in the league, but it was the play of the young Jones-Drew, with two touchdowns, that was the deciding factor overall. A successful duo of two high quality running backs is always a good thing, never a bad thing, when trying to run deep into the playoffs. If there has been one knock on the Patriots is that they have struggled against the run a bit. At least, struggled as much as a team who has won every game they’ve played. Jacksonville is also expected to be every bit as physical at the Patriots, a fact they tack pride of.

The New England Patriots got a week of rest to enjoy their body of work, which included multiple records set by the duo of Tom Brady and Randy Moss. To give an example of the dominance the Patriots had this year they scored 589 points this year. The next closest team in their division scored 268. On defense they gave up 274 points. The next closest in their division gave up 354. However, as mentioned, the last few weeks of the season weren’t a cakewalk for the Patriots. Even in the final game of the year the Pats needed a second half comeback to defeat the New York Giants 38-35 in a game of the year candidate that ultimately have very little effect on the regular season, other then the fact the Giants were trying to end the undefeated streak. If Giants fans have their way, they’ll be seeing each other again in February.

As odds on favorite it’s no surprise when I pick the Patriots to win this game. I am not sure Garrard has enough big game experience to lead his troops against the defense of the Patriots. I think defensively they can keep it close, but as the game wears on I think the Patriots will take a steady lead, eventually winning by nearly three touchdowns.

89Th PGA Championship in Tulsa, OK

pga-06-hole17.jpg

The 89th PGA Championship might be the most complete major championship examination of 2007. Again they will all meet in

Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Southern Hills Country Club to decide who will be the leader of this final mayor event of the year.

The first PGA Championship was held in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. The winner, Jim Barnes, received $500. 2006 winner Tiger Woods received $1.224 million. The champion is also awarded the Wanamaker Trophy, which was donated by Rodman Wanamaker.

PGA champions are automatically invited to play in the other three majors (the Masters, U.S. Open, and the Open Championship) for the next five years, and are exempt from qualifying for the PGA Championship for life. They also receive membership on the PGA Tour for the following five seasons and invitations to the Players Championship for five years.  The PGA Championship was established for the purpose of providing a high profile tournament specifically for professional golfers at a time when they were generally not held in high esteem in a sport that was largely run by wealthy amateurs. It is the only major which does not invite leading amateurs to compete, and the only one which reserves a large number of places, 20 of 156, for club professionals. These slots are determined by the top finishers in the club pro championship, which is held in July.

Tiger Woods is the obviuos favorite, he just won the MGC-Bridgstone Invitacional last week in Akron, Ohio. Even if he came out of his eight straight victory, he has had not mayor success at Southern Hills this is the third time he is entering a PGA after playing the week before.

The US Open wrist injury is no longer an issue for Phil Mickelson. Neither is Darren Clarke’s torn hamstring he is fully recovered from it, both of these top players are ready to take on the 7,131 yards of Southern Hills court including the heat wave that is being forecast for this week.  This year PGA Championship has 66 international players from 23 countres making this the largest foreign born tournament in history.

2007 British Open Tiger Woods Betting!

carnoustie-british.jpg

The British Open Championship is the oldest of the four major championships in men’s golf.

1. April - The Masters (weekend ending 2d Sunday in April) - hosted as an invitational by and played at Augusta National Golf Club
2. June - U.S. Open (weekend ending with the 3d Sunday in June) - hosted by the USGA and played at various locations in the USA
3. July - The Open Championship (weekend containing the 3d Friday in July) - hosted by the R&A and always played on a links course at various locations in the UK
4. August
- PGA Championship (4th weekend after the Open Championship) - hosted by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and played at various locations in the USA.

It is the only major held outside the USA and is administered by the R&A, which is the governing body of golf outside the U.S. and Mexico. The event takes place every year on one of nine historic links courses in the United Kingdom.

Historically, The Open’s prize money was consistently the least of the four majors; since 2002 it has been the highest and tournament is often referred to as the British Open outside the United Kingdom.

In 2006, The British Open had a prize fund of £4 million (at the time, approximately €5.86 million or $7.43 million) and in 2007  Carnoustie GC on July 19th - 22nd  will be hosting this fantastic event.

If you pay attention… Tiger Woods it’s ONE MORE TIME one the favotires to win the British Open, will see if he can make it this year!

Pacman Jones surrenders !!

pacmans faceHis distinctive dreadlocks gone, Adam “Pacman” Jones posted bail, walked out of jail early June 22 and headed home to Nashville, leaving his lawyers to again sort out the legal entanglements of the suspended NFL player.

Jones surrendered to face charges in a Las Vegas strip club melee that preceded a triple shooting. The Tennessee Titans cornerback was released on $20,000 bail, and was scheduled to return for an initial court appearance July 23.

PacmansJones will plead not guilty to two felony charges of coercion stemming from allegations that he threatened to kill Minxx club employees and that he bit a bar bouncer, his lawyers said.

If convicted, the 23-year-old Jones faces a maximum of 12 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The arrest was the sixth for Jones since he was drafted in 2005. NFL and team officials declined comment.

Jones’ attorneys complained that police had unfairly handled his latest case.

“They gave us a one-day notice to get people cross-country on warrants that weren’t even issued yet,” lawyer Manny Arora said.

Belmont Stakes 2007

belmont.jpg

Brief History of the Belmont StakesThe first Belmont in the United States was not the famous stakes race or even the man for whom it is named. Rather, the first Belmont was a race horse that arrived in California in 1853 from his breeding grounds of Franklin, Ohio. The Belmont Stakes, however, are named after August Belmont, a financier who made quite a name and fortune for himself in New York politics and society. Obviously, Mr. Belmont was also quite involved in horse racing, and his imprint is even intertwined within the history of the Kentucky Derby. The Belmont’s AgeOne thing the Belmont does have over the Derby is that it is the oldest of the three Triple Crown events. The Belmont predates the Preakness by six years, the Kentucky Derby by eight. The first running of the Belmont Stakes was in 1867 at Jerome Park, on, believe it or not, a Thursday. At a mile and five furlongs, the conditions included an entry fee of $200, half forfeit with $1,500 added. Furthermore, not only is the Belmont the oldest Triple Crown race, but it is the fourth oldest race overall in North America. The Phoenix Stakes, now run in the fall at Keeneland as the Phoenix Breeders’ Cup, was first run in 1831. The Queen’s Plate in Canada made its debut in 1860, while the Travers in Saratoga opened in 1864. However, since there were gaps in sequence for the Travers, the Belmont is third only to the Phoenix and Queen’s Plate in total runnings. Some Monumental Belmont Moments

In 1890, the Belmont was moved from Jerome Park to Morris Park, a mile and three-eighths track located a few miles east of what is now Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Belmont was held at Morris Park until Belmont Park’s opening in 1905.

Here’s a tidbit you didn’t see in Derby or Preakness history. When Grey Lag won the Belmont in 1921, it marked the first running of the Belmont Stakes in the counter-clockwise manner of American fashion. This 53rd running was a mile and three-eighths over the main course; previous editions at Belmont Park had been run clockwise, in accordance with English custom, over a fish-hook course which included part of the training track and the main dirt oval.

The first post parade in this country came in the 14th running of the Belmont in 1880. Until then the horses went directly from paddock to post.

The Belmont has been run at various distances. From 1867 tp 1873 it was 1 5/8 miles; from 1874 to 1889 it was 1 1/2 miles; from 1890 through 1892, and in 1895, it was held at 1 1/4 miles; from 1896 through 1925 it was 1 5/8 miles; since 1925 the Belmont Stakes has been a race of 1 1/2 miles.

Champion Sires

As we saw in the breeding section of the Call To The Derby Post Betting How-To Page, champions horses breed champion horses. This certainly holds form in the Belmont Stakes. A total of eleven Belmont Stakes winners have sired at least one other Belmont winner.

Man o’ War heads the list of Belmont champion sires. Not only did he win the race himself in 1920, but three of his subsequent sires won it as well: American Flag in 1925, Crusader in 1926 and War Admiral in 1937, who went on to win the Triple Crown.

Commando won the 1901 running, then sired Peter Pan, the 1907 champ and the Colin, the 1908 winner.
1930 champion Gallant Fox sired both Omaha (1935) and Granville (1936).

Count Fleet won the 1943 edition, and then sired back-to-back Belmont winners with Counterpoint (1951) and One Count (1952).

1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew sired a Call To The Derby Post favorite in Swale, who won both the Derby and the Belmont in 1984, as well as A.P. Indy, who won the Belmont in 1992. 1999 Belmont winner Lemon Drop Kid is also a descendant of the Slew.

The following horses have sired one Belmont winner each: Duke of Magenta of 1878 sired Eric (1889); Spendthrift of 1879 sired Hastings (1896); Hastings then followed his again by siring Masterman, the 1902 winner. The Finn of 1915 sired Zev (1923); Sword Dancer of 1959 sired Damascus (1967); last but not least, Triple Crown winner Secretariat of 1973 sired Risen Star, the 1988 winner.

Money at the Belmont

Oh, have times changed. The purse for the first running of the Belmont was $1,500 added with a total purse of $2,500, with the winner’s share taken by the filly Ruthless. The lowest winner’s share in Belmont history was the $1,825 earned by The Finn in 1915. The Belmont set an opposite record in 1992, in which the richest Belmont purse ever totaled 1,764,800. Five times in Belmont history only two horses entered the race: 1887, 1888, 1892, 1910 and sadly, 1920, the year Man O’War triumphed. The largest field, on the other hand, was 15 in 1983, when Caveat defeated Slew O’ Gold. In 1875 14 horses ran, when Calvin outdueled stablemate Aristides, that year’s winner of the inaugural Kentucky Derby. The Belmont’s lowest paid winner: Count Fleet in 1943, who paid a paltry $2.10. The Belmont’s highest winner: Sherluck in 1961, who dished out $132.10. A favorite’s race: Of the 129 Belmont runnings through 1997, the favorite had won 58 times, including 9 out of the last 25. There have been some strange twists of betting in Belmont history. Since the advent of mutuels in New York in 1940 there have been six times when no place or show betting was taken on the Belmont Stakes. The last time there was no show wagering was in 1978 when Affirmed and Alydar held their famous confrontation. There was also no show betting when Secretariat won his Triple Crown in 1973; no wonder–Secretariat won by a record 31 lengths. Show betting was also eliminated in 1957 when Gallant Man defeated Bold Ruler, and also in 1953 when Native Dancer won. In 1943, believe it or not, there was no place or show wagering when Triple Crown winner Count Fleet went off $.05 to the dollar and won by 25 lengths. To wrap it up, Whirlaway completed his Triple Crown victory in 1941 without show betting. In other words, by the time horses dominate the Derby and Preakness, there just might not be that many challengers when the horse goes to complete the sweep. Since 1940 there have also been 30 horses listed as odds-on favorites in the Belmont Stakes. In 1957, there were two: Gallant Man, who won at 19-20, and Bold Ruler, who finished third at 17-20. Of these 30, only 12 went on to win. The highest on-track mutuel handle on the Belmont: 1993. A total of $2,793,320 was bet on the Belmont that year, with $1,409,970 wagered on win, place and show betting, and $1,293,954 on the daily double, exacta and triple.

The Fastest Belmont

Who else? Secretariat set a world-record that still stands for the mile and a half distance on a dirt track at 2:24. (He had finished a mile and a quarter at 1:59, faster than his own Derby record of 1:59 2/5.)

Belmont Trophies

“The Belmont Stakes trophy is a Tiffany-made silver bowl, with cover, 18 inches high, 15 inches across and 14 inches at the base. Atop the cover is a silver figure of Fenian, winner of the third running of the Belmont Stakes in 1869. The bowl is supported by three horses representing the three foundation thoroughbreds–Eclipse, Herod and Matchem. The trophy, a solid silver bowl originally crafted by Tiffany’s, was presented by the Belmont family as a perpetual award for the Belmont Stakes in 1926. It was the trophy August Belmont’s Fenian won in 1869 and had remained with the Belmont family since that time. The winning owner is given the option of keeping the trophy for the year their horse reigns as Belmont champion.”

Belmont Stakes in 2006Today, this marquee meet of the Maryland racing season will feature 27 stakes races for purses of $4.455 million. Purses for thirteen races were increased from a year ago, while just one was decreased. Fourteen of the added-money races, including all 10 of the graded stakes for the meet, are slated for Preakness week, including nine on Preakness Day.

I hope you find all this information useful to bet on the Belmont Stakes.

Kentucky Derby History

kentucky-derby.jpg

The classic American horse race, the Kentucky Derby is the oldest consecutively held Thoroughbred race in America. It is run annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Along with the Preakness in mid-May, and Belmont in early June, it is the first jewel of the coveted Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing, which has been won by only eleven horses since 1919. Triple Crown winners include memorable names such as Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Whirlaway, and Affirmed.

The first Kentucky Derby was held May 17, 1875, before a crowd of 10,000 from around the city, state and surrounding areas. In that race, a field of 15 three-year-olds ran a 1.5 mile course which was won by H.P. McGrath’s Aristides. Although the first Derby was held at 1.5 miles, the distance was changed to the current 1.25 miles in 1896. The Derby field is limited to three-year-olds; fillies carry 121 pounds and colts 126 pounds. So far, only three fillies have won the Derby: Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980, and Winning Colors in 1988. The Kentucky Derby has also produced countless statistics and bits of trivia over the course of its history. The largest field was during the 100th running in 1974 when 23 horses ran. The smallest fields were in 1892 and 1905, with only three horses in each race.

The fastest Derby was run by the legendary Secretariat, who covered the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59 2/5, the only Derby winner to finish under two minutes.

Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr who built Churchill Downs in Louisville, wanted his track to have a race that would rival Englands Epsom Derby. After visiting England to study both its tracks and its races, he established the Kentucky Derby, which was first run on May 17, 1875.

However, the Derby was just another regional race until 1902, when Colonel Matt J. Winn took over the track. Although he had seen every Derby since the beginning, Winn know little about horse racing or running tracks. But he was a very good promoter.

After rising money to same Churchill Downs from bankruptcy, Winn began making frequent trips to New York, then the center of American racing to persuade owners to enter their horses in the Kentucky Derby. His persistence paid off. By 1920, the Derby had become the best-known race in the North America and it was attracting the top three-year-olds from all over the country.

The first race in the Triple Crown, The Derby is run on the first Saturday in May. A whole week of festivities know as The Kentucky Derby Festival is built around the race which, like the Indianapolis 500, has become as much a happening as a sporting event. It attracts crowds of well over 150,000 spectators and is watched on television by millions more, many of who are otherwise not interested in Thoroughbred racing.

Dancing With The Stars

The fourth season of the hit television show, Dancing With The Stars kicks off tonight, and SportBet.com has the latest odds. The winners from the first three years were actress Kelly Monaco, singer Drew Lachey, and former NFL great Emmitt Smith.

Here are this year’s favorites with odds listed in parenthesis.

Laila Ali (150)

She might not “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” like her dad Muhammad did, but the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. This boxer is quick on her feet and that has made her the favorite.

Joey Fatone (225)

A former member of the boy band N-Sync, this singer and actor is out to prove he still has the moves after turning 30. At these odds, most think that he does.

Ian Ziering (420)

Ziering is a 42 year-old actor best known as Steve Sanders on the television series, Beverly Hills 90210. If Ziering loses, expect a big pow-wow at the Peach Pit with Kelly, Donna, Dylan, Brandon, and Brenda.

Apolo Anton Ohno (600)

This 24 year-old speedskater is a two time Olympic gold medalist. That athletic background immediately moves him towards the top of the odds list.

Leeza Gibbons (800)

Gibbons is a 49 year-old talk show host best known for hosting Entertainment Tonight. These odds seem to be giving a lot of respect for her dancing skills.

Clyde Drexler (900)

Clyde “The Glide” is a 44 year-old Hall of Fame basketball player who made his mark with Portland and Houston. Thankfully, we do not have to see former teammate, Charles Barkley participate in this event.

Shandi Finnessey (900)

This 28 year-old beauty queen is most famous for winning the Miss USA title. We know she has the looks, but does she have the dancing moves?

Billy Ray Cyrus (1000)

Cyrus is a 45 year-old country music singer best known for his hit, “Achy Breaky Heart”. After this competition, he may have “Achy Breaky Feet”.

Paulina Porizkova (1200)

Porizkova is a 41 year-old former Supermodel best known for her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers in the 1980’s. She is still married to former Cars singer Ric Ocasek.

John Ratzenberger (1200)

This 59 year-old actor is most famous for playing mailman Cliff Clavin on the legendary television series, Cheers. No word on whether his buddy Norm (George Wendt) will be in the next Dancing With The Stars version.

Heather Mills (3100)

Mills is famous for being the former wife of Paul McCartney. The odds on her are so low because she is performing in this competition with an artificial leg.

Bet on Dancing with the Starts.

Snoop Dogg Arrested @ SoCal Airport - October 26th

snoopdogg.bmp Rapper Snoop Dogg was Arrested Thursday 26th of October at the Southern California airport(Bob Hope Airport) When the rapper whos real name is Calvin Broadus pulled up at a loading zone, airport officers stopped him due to a vehicle violation. Once they had him cited for the violation they proceded to search his vehicle and during this search they found both a gun and marijuana. Snoop Dogg was later released after posting a $35,000 bail and was then scheduled to appear in court on Dec 12th.

Rappers are known for always being in trouble with the Law, but I think that a lot times they are also hunted by the Police. Snoop Dogg has had his fair share of runins with the law, he was part of the notorious N.W.A which was known for its harsh lyrics and hate towards the police. N.W.A was made up of the following artists, Ice Cube, MC Ren, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E may he rest in peace and DJ Yella. Snoop Dogg is from the west coast and he has no shame is showing it either, he has always been related to the Crips out of California.

up-in-smoke-tour.bmpSnoop Dogg has been around for along time and always seems to keep on producing new and improved music. He took part in one of the better tours that I have ever seen the Up In Smoke Tour, this tour was made up of MC Ren, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and of course Snoop Dogg himself. Society has been good at blaming rap artists for violence in todays world, but I don’t see how people can say that due to listening to rap music it makes one want to go and shoot up the school. Where were the parents when all this happened, they are the ones that allow the kids to get out of control and tell me where do they get the guns from, yes thats right from their parents house. Rap is a type of music that involves amazing beats and the lyrics are poetic. I say we let the Rap artist produce their music and if ya don’t like it then don’t listen to it thats the bottom line…

Just Another Saturday Night here in Costa Rica!

costarica-flag.bmp So yesterday was just simply another Saturday here in Costa Rica, so my day personally started of feeling tired from playing golf and partying away Friday night. I was scheduled to be in the office at 8am to start my ten hour shift. To my own amazement I walked into the office at 7:29am thats when my Customer Service Supervisor told me I could clock in early since they were short staffed. Thats when it his me that maybe the get together of CS department clerks for a birthday party was the reason of the long faces in the office! So I got myself cracking away and when I realized what time it was, it was 6:05pm and I able to clock out and leave. After puffing away on a smoke I decided to walk home and get some food.

The reason why I was in the need of some food was because I needed to get my energy level re-loaded since I had to work at the bar from 7pm to close and close generally being at 2am I realized that I was going to be tired. At around 11pm or so to my own amazement one of my co-workers walked into the bar, he had a seat at the bar and I was proud to serve him a cold Imperial which is one of the local beers here. About another 30mins or so went by and two more peeps from Sportbet roll into the local watering hole. They all had some beers and from what I could tell they were enjoying themselves, I was getting that urge to go join them for a nice cold beverage.

So now its close to 12 midnight and the first peep rolls out since he had to work an early shift today, so none of us blamed him. Finally the clock hit 1am and the bar was pretty much dead so I asked the boss for early leave and he granted it to me, so finally I was able to go have some drinks and talk some smack with the peeps. After I was dropped of at my place I had a vison and that was to hit up one of the local night clubs/ strip clubs for some drinks. So I got my act together and hit up the Pink Panther, after drinkin my two entrance drinks I was able to flag down a taxi and called it game over for the night.

Today is simply another day here in Costa Rica again, sitting here in the office waiting for it to become 10pm local time to get of work and go home and hit the sack, now sitting here infront of my screen I am starting to wonder why did I not just go to bed yesterday instead of havign a blast. Well when one is single and have nothing to worry then one can allow oneself to let lose and have a fun night then and again……. Wonder what next week has in store not only for myself or with anyone here in the office?
