Monday Night Football Week 9 Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Washington Redskins

If you’ve read any of my work before, which I’d be surprised if you did, you would have read a time or two that the Washington Redskins are my favorite team.  They have been since I was old enough to handle the remote control, and they most likely will be until I’m old enough to not handle the remote anymore.  As you can imagine, I’m quite happy about there 6-2 start this season.  In fact, they should be 7-1, but they lost to the then winless Rams at home.  See, that’s what it’s like to be a Washington Redskins fan.  Even when they are doing very bad, they have a way of keeping the game close, meaning you as a fan are forced to watch to the very last second, the one they usually lose.  This season they are doing the same thing, only in reverse, winning most of there games by six games or less.  It’s one of my dreams that sometime in the near future they win a game by 30-40 points, so I can enjoy the second half of a game, and my wife doesn’t have to hear my scream at the TV every other play.

NFL Week 9 PicksNew England Patriots vs. Indianapolis Colts

Just last year this would have probably been hailed as game of the year.  However, it’s amazing how fast things can change in a year.  The Colts, 3-4 will entire the month of November with a below .500 record for the first time under head coach Tony Dungy.  They have looked pedestrian at best, and they are coming off one of their worse losses of the year, a 31-21 loss to the 7-0 Titans, a game where the final score made it seem closer than it was.  There are rumors that Peyton Manning’s knee is bothering him, and/or that it hasn’t fully recovered since the offseason surgery he had, which prevented him from playing a single down during the preseason.  At least the Colts have their quarterback, as Tom Brady continues to watch from the sidelines, as he will the rest of the year.

NFL 2008 Week 8 Picks: Indianapolis Colts vs. Tennessee Titans.

At the beginning of the season if you had to pick which one of these two teams had the better record, you would have probably picked the Peyton Manning led colts.  Also, if you had to pick a team that would still be undefeated at this point, the Tennessee Titans would probably be near the bottom of your list.  Welcome to a crazy season of NFL football.  The Tennessee Titans season started off weird enough, when their quarterback Vince Young started the season playing poorly, and then hurt his knee, and is now relegated to the number two quarterback.  Their starting quarterback is someone that most people didn’t even know that was still in the league, Kerry Collins.  The last Collins sighting was when he was in a New York uniform leading his team to the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens.  Honestly, who was surprised he was still in the league, feel free to answer in the comment section below.  Anyway, despite all these “problems” the Titans defense has remained intact, leading the team to that previously mentioned undefeated start.

NFL 2008 Week 8 Picks: Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers

The good news about this game is that one of these two teams will finally get a win, in what has amounted to a tough season for both clubs up until this point.  The Seahawks disaster of a season is purely because of injuries.  They have had an injury at every skill position, and there offense is below dismal because of it.  The San Francisco 49ers have just fired coach Mike Nolan and replaced him with Mike Singletary.  If Singletary could go back and time, then maybe the 49ers would have a chance of winning a few more games.  However, we have seen what a coaching change has done for St. Louis, who before the change was considered the worst team in football.  Now they have beaten the Redskins, at their field and the Cowboys.

Monday Night Football Week 7 Picks: Denver Broncos vs. New England Patriots

The NFL has finally found a way to stop the New England Patirots!  Injure their star future hall of fame quarterback and have him be replaced with a guy who hasn’t started since high school.  The New England Patriots are playing valiantly in absence of Tom Brady, and if they some how make the playoffs this year it should be considered almost as good as winning a Super Bowl.  The defense is old, and finally looking that way, and for the first time in years they just seem entirely out of ball games from the opening whistle.  This wasn’t more evident then in San Diego last week when they lost 30-10, and it wasn’t even really that close.  However, the coaching staff of the Patriots has a way to turn things around in a hurry, and playing at home against the Broncos on Monday night you have to assume they will find a way to stay in the game.

NFL 2008 Week 7 Picks: Seattle Seahawks vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

A defense that is getting nothing but older, and a team that has been under two different quarterbacks this year.  That doesn’t exactly sound like a recipe for success.  But, that’s not the case with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who have came out of the gate with a 4-2 record.  The 4-2 record could be even better, considering they have lost those two games by a combined seven points.  The defense has once again proven to be solid.  The quarterback play of Brian Griese and Jeff Garcia hasn’t been spectacular, but neither one of those players make many mistakes, allowing their team a chance to win each and every week.  Both Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn are averaging over five yards a carry.  Dunn, expected to be little more than a role player in his advancing years has often been the go to back down the stretch in some of Tampa’s close games.

NFL Week 6 Monday Night Football Picks: New York Giants vs. Cleveland Browns

If the New York Giants had any kind of hangover after winning the Super Bowl, they got over it during the preseason.  The team hasn’t missed a beat, and in many cases they look even better than their Super Bowl team.  Their defense has been stellar despite key injuries and losses in the offseason, and Eli Manning is playing with a confidence that only winning a Super Bowl can give you.  With the NFC East looking like the best conference in football the Giants will need to keep up the winning with both the Cowboys and Redskins with one loss in the division, but so far so good.

NFL Sunday Night Week 6 Picks: New England Patriots vs. San Diego Chargers

Both of these teams made cross country trips last week, with opposite degrees of success.  The New England Patriots, coming off a bye week and still getting over the loss of Tom Brady, traveled to California to take on the 49ers.  The Patriots coaching staff showed that with two weeks to plan they can come up with a successful game plan against a team that really thought they’d be able to get a home win.  The Patriots got their first franchise win in San Francisco, knocking off the Niners 30-21.  The Chargers on the other hand traveled to Miami to take on a Dolphins team that was 1-2, but with their win coming against the Patriots.  While it wasn’t pretty, the Dolphins were able to ruin the Chargers cross country trip with a 17-10 win.  For a team that was predicted to be a Super Bowl threat, things aren’t looking well for the Chargers, as they see their record dip to 2-3.

NFL 2008 Monday Night Football Picks: Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints

When the Minnesota Vikings announced that Gus Frerotte was their starting quarterback the first thought that came through my head was, “I didn’t even know he was still in the league.”  The last vision I have of Gus the Bus is when he was ramming his head into a wall as part of my beloved Washington Redskins.  Regardless, he’s 1-1 as the starter for the Vikings, who as a preseason favorite to make the playoffs, have started the season 1-3, and in desperate need of a victory.  Frerotte has played pretty well, he hasn’t done anything spectacular, but he hasn’t made any major mistakes that have prevented his team from winning either.  The Vikings also still have one of the best running backs in the league, Adrian Peterson.  Peterson is averaging over 100 yards a game, including 5.1 yards per carry.  However, he has had some hamstring problems this week, but as of right now he is expected to play, which is good news for the Vikings.  The Vikings could easily be at least 3-1, they lost their first two games by a combined nine points.
