The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was founded by Carl Fisher in 1906. It is forerunner of the so called “Indianapolis 500-Mile Race”- often shortened to Indianapolis 500 or just Indy 500, born with great success on May 30 in the far 1911. The first Indianapolis 500 Mile Race was held in the same year. And this contest has been run each May since 1911 till the present day.

It was first run in 1873 at Pimlico Race Course again in Baltimore, Maryland and was founded by the then-Maryland governor Oden Bowie. The first Preakness Stakes was won in 1873 by an 11-1 long shot.
