Michelle Wie misses Cut Again! Lorena Ochoa wins third Consecutive,

wieswing.jpg So Lorena Ochoa won her third consecutive tournament and the young talent of Wie once again fails to be around for the weekened! The 17 year old whom at one time was thought of as the future of the game of golf. She does draw the biggest crowds at every tournament that she shows up for. She has now missed three cuts this season and has pulled out of two events. Personally I am getting tired of her stealing the Spot light from Ochoa and the other players that are actually performing well and winning tournaments not just that players that can actually make the cut.

Everyone seems to be too busy talking about her, Wie this Wie that, lets talk about how Ochoa has taken the top ranking of the LPGA with a firm fist. Yes maybe its because Annika Sorenstam is not playing her best due to injurys, but the bottom line here is that Wie gets way too much attention maybe if she would focus more on her golf and healing her wrist rather than coming up with excuses for her bad play and being too worried about if her outfit matches and looks good.

Wie’s best finish this year was when she took 69th at the Evian Masters in France last month, is this the type of golf that we should start getting used to seeing from the Once a Star to be Wie! The question willl be answered over time and hopefully her wrist will heal and we will once again be able to enjoy the greatness that she for sure still has to offer us. Young Wie will begin classes at Stanford on September 24th maybe this will allow her to focus on School and get her mind of the bad golf she has been showing lately. By attending Stanford I feel that Wie will have time to rest her wrist work on here game here and there and maybe start to build some confidence and allow her to return with some loud thunder.

2007-2008 NFL Regular Season

superdome.jpg

NFL SEASON STARTS NEXT THURSDAY!

The NFL Season kicks off about a week from now with a stellar game right out of the gate.  The defending champion Indianapolis Colts will take on last years biggest surprise, the New Orleans Saints.  The Colts are once again looking like a playoff contending team, but it is their defense that is a major problem.  Last year they made up for their lack of run defense, last in the league, by a high powered offense led by super quarterback Peyton Manning.  In their playoff run last year they were able to muscle up and were motivated by the return of Bob Sanders who had missed a large portion of the regular season due to injuries.  However, this year they lost three players from last years defense, including Cato June, Nick Harper, and oft-injured Corey Simon.  Also, on the offensive side of the ball they lost running back Dominic Rhodes.  To many, this seems like an opportunity for career back-up Joseph Addai.  For others, the loss of that one-two tandum may just add more fuel to the fire suggesting the Colts will not be repeating in the 2007-2008 season.

Their appearance in the NFC Championship game was just the tip of the iceberg according to the New Orleans Saints.  When you look at their three headed monster they provide on offense, you begin to see why.  Quarterback Drew Brees, and the running back tandem of Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush led the Saints to the fifth best offense in the league.  On a stat level McAllister had a slightly better season than Bush, but with Bush entering his second season, he is expected to take over.  Bush has already established himself as one of the best running back receivers in the league, and will probably get even more touches this year.  But, McAllister, a surefire starter on just about any other team in the league, is one heck of a second option.  Brees has one of the best TD’s to interception ratios in the league over the last three seasons, making him probably the most valuable tool on this high powered offense.  One of the only concerns coming out of Saints camp is about who he will throw the ball to.  With the departure of Joe Horn to the Falcons, there aren’t really any established receivers on the team.  Last year, Marques Colston came out of nowhere and became the leading receiver.  Will he have a case of a sophomore slump, or will he be able to once again produce at a high level?

One team that saw their fantastic season end in just one playoff game is the San Diego Chargers.  The Chargers went 14-2 and broke a ton of offensive records with much of that thanks going to NFL MVP LaDanian Tomlinson.  But, the biggest loss of this team from a year ago may not be any of the players, but of former head coach Marty Schottenheimer.  Schottenheimer was replaced because of the first round playoff loss, but it was who he was replaced by that was the shocker.  Norv Turner has a career coaching record of 58-82-1.  On top of that the Chargers also lost assistant coaches Cam Cameron, and Wade Phillips.  So, basically the entire staff that put together this great talent has been replaced.  However, the talent is still there, and despite Turner’s woes as a head coach, he is still highly respected as one of the best when it comes to putting together an offense.  The Chargers had 11 Pro Bowlers last year, and all of them have returned in an attempt to jump over the hurdle and become Super Bowl Champions.

One team that always seems to be in the mix of things at the end of the season is the New England Patriots.  A major difference between this team and past year’s team is that the Patriots have a superstar player for the first time in years in Randy Moss.  While their success has proved that having a star player is hardly a must, the addition of Moss gives Tom Brady his first ever superstar wide receiver.  There is a debate among NFL insiders arguing if Moss has already shown signs of slowing down, or if he just played unmotivated because of how poor his team was in Oakland.  Moss also has the reputation of being a handful in the locker room, but the core of players already established in New England is expected to keep Moss in check.  Their defense is still expected to remain one of the top units in the league, and the addition of linebacker AD Thomas should solidify that.  There are some concerns that the defense is getting a little old, but you can’t really say there is a problem with the defense until they start showing signs of slipping.

One of the great things about the NFL is that it seems to change yearly.  There is a very good chance that none of the teams I just previewed will even win the Super Bowl.  But, heading into the fresh season this batch of teams seem like the best teams.  But, for all we know, come Super Bowl time, I could be previewing the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans match up.  Have a great season!!

2007 US Tennis Open

arthurashestadiuminside1.jpg

US OPEN AUG. 27-SEPT. 9

As the nights get cooler the action is heating up in the world of tennis. The US Open, live from Flushing, New York, has begun. The excitement will kick off immediately for fans of US tennis because two of their biggest champion hopes will start play today. Sisters Venus and Serena Williams take on competitors in the first round immediately following a ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the US Open victory of one of their hero’s, Athena Gibson. Serena is looking to have her season end on a good note, after winning the Australian Open this year. She is currently ranked 8th in the WTA rankings, but has made nearly 1.8 million dollars in prize money. Her sister Venus, ranked 13 in the WTA rankings, has not won a major this year, but did win the tournament “The Championships.” Where ever the Williams’ sisters go they always draw a crowd, and this year will be no different. Serena is seeded 8th and Venus 12th in this years tournaments.

However, defending US Open women’s champion Maria Sharapova won’t go down without a fight. Sharapova is seeded second, but has not one a major this year. Despite not winning a tournament this year, she has played well. She was the runner-up at the Australian open, semi-finals at Roland Garros, and made the fourth round at Wimbledon. The Russian hopes she can win her second major in two years with a repeat victory at the US Open.

Seeded number one in the women’s bracket is Justine Henin. Henin has already won at Roland Garros this year, and finished in the semi-finals at Wimbledon. She did not compete at the Australian Open. Last year Henin was runner up to Sharapova, and would love a chance to gain a rematch. Henin is currently in the mist of enjoying a career resurgence, which sees her as the number one ranked player in the world.

The men’s side of the draw looks to be a two horse race, but it’s one of the most exciting rivalries in sports today, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Federer has been an absolute beast the last two plus years. Going back to Wimbledon of 2005, Federer has won seven of nine major tournaments, including the last three US Opens. Needless to say Federer is the odds on favorite to take home the championship. But, he has had some competition of late by the name of Rafael Nadal. Nadal has won this year at Roland Garros, and was runner up at Wimbledon. If it wasn’t for Federer, it would probably be Nadal that would be winning all of these tournaments.

Other players that American’s will have an eye on our James Blake and Andy Roddick. They both have been on the cusp of winning a major tournament for quite a while and their American crowd may be enough to push them to the promise land.

If this isn’t enough excitement for you, then remember this, upset always do happen. For example 18th seeded Marcos Baghdatis just lost to Max Mirnyi in the first round. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

UFC 74 outcome…

randy-couture.jpg

As expected, Randy Couture again pulled off the unexpected. At 44 and badly undersized to be fighting at heavyweight, Couture nonetheless defended his title at UFC 74: Respect by dismantling younger, bigger challenger Gabriel Gonzaga. Despite being outweighed by almost 25 pounds and giving up 16 years, Couture again choked out Father Time. In this case, he kept Gonzaga pinned against the cage, landed one compact right uppercut after another and essentially won the fight with a wicked first-round slam. That takedown broke Gonzaga’s nose and set the tone for his third-round stoppage win. With Couture’s win, we learned one more time not to doubt the old man, who first fought at UFC 13.

Seven other things we learned from UFC 74:

1. Dana White is excited to have signed Wanderlei Silva
2. Roger Huerta is overrated
3. Kendall Grove is going to be a star
4. Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck: The real 170-pound title bout
5. Did we mention that Couture is pretty good?
6. The UFC is good at marketing
7. The UFC is good at marketing, Part II

89Th PGA Championship in Tulsa, OK

pga-06-hole17.jpg

The 89th PGA Championship might be the most complete major championship examination of 2007. Again they will all meet in

Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Southern Hills Country Club to decide who will be the leader of this final mayor event of the year.

The first PGA Championship was held in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. The winner, Jim Barnes, received $500. 2006 winner Tiger Woods received $1.224 million. The champion is also awarded the Wanamaker Trophy, which was donated by Rodman Wanamaker.

PGA champions are automatically invited to play in the other three majors (the Masters, U.S. Open, and the Open Championship) for the next five years, and are exempt from qualifying for the PGA Championship for life. They also receive membership on the PGA Tour for the following five seasons and invitations to the Players Championship for five years.  The PGA Championship was established for the purpose of providing a high profile tournament specifically for professional golfers at a time when they were generally not held in high esteem in a sport that was largely run by wealthy amateurs. It is the only major which does not invite leading amateurs to compete, and the only one which reserves a large number of places, 20 of 156, for club professionals. These slots are determined by the top finishers in the club pro championship, which is held in July.

Tiger Woods is the obviuos favorite, he just won the MGC-Bridgstone Invitacional last week in Akron, Ohio. Even if he came out of his eight straight victory, he has had not mayor success at Southern Hills this is the third time he is entering a PGA after playing the week before.

The US Open wrist injury is no longer an issue for Phil Mickelson. Neither is Darren Clarke’s torn hamstring he is fully recovered from it, both of these top players are ready to take on the 7,131 yards of Southern Hills court including the heat wave that is being forecast for this week.  This year PGA Championship has 66 international players from 23 countres making this the largest foreign born tournament in history.
