The British Open Championship is the oldest of the four major championships in men’s golf.

1. April – The Masters (weekend ending 2d Sunday in April) – hosted as an invitational by and played at Augusta National Golf Club
2. June – U.S. Open (weekend ending with the 3d Sunday in June) – hosted by the USGA and played at various locations in the USA
3. July – The Open Championship (weekend containing the 3d Friday in July) – hosted by the R&A and always played on a links course at various locations in the UK
4. August
– PGA Championship (4th weekend after the Open Championship) – hosted by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and played at various locations in the USA.

It is the only major held outside the USA and is administered by the R&A, which is the governing body of golf outside the U.S. and Mexico. The event takes place every year on one of nine historic links courses in the United Kingdom.

Historically, The Open’s prize money was consistently the least of the four majors; since 2002 it has been the highest and tournament is often referred to as the British Open outside the United Kingdom.

In 2006, The British Open had a prize fund of £4 million (at the time, approximately €5.86 million or $7.43 million) and in 2007  Carnoustie GC on July 19th – 22nd  will be hosting this fantastic event.
