UEFA Champions League 2006/2007 Round Two Roundtable

UEFA Champion League 2006/2007

The road to Athens truly begins here. Eight matches played over two legs each, to determine the elite eight.

Barcelona vs. Liverpool

Maybe the most attractive tie, Barca looked really poor against Valencia at the weekend, still a strong side in Europe.

Prediction: Barcelona (4-2 on agg).

Celtic vs. AC Milan

Celtic played some good football in their group, and deservedly went on the the next stage, however, players like Kaka and Ronaldo could make a big difference.

Prediction: AC Milan (4-1 on agg).

Inter vs. Valencia

After the Valencia’s football display on the weekend, it seem won’t be easy for Inter to go through, in the other hand, Inter’s current form in the Serie A, not forgetting the likes Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Hernán Crespo, Dejan Stankovic, Marco Materazzi, Adriano and Esteban Cambiasso… would be reasonable to think Inter will win the serie.

Prediction: Inter (3-2 on agg).

Lille vs. Manchester United

Here comes a tough one, we couldn’t say that Man U have been precisely lucky against French teams, and there’s no reason to underestimate Lille, Cristiano’s form have been impressive this season.

Prediction: Manchester United.

Porto vs. Chelsea

Should be easy for Chelsea to win against Porto, with Terry and Cech back from injury, Drogba scoring goals as usual, and Schevchenko putting his name lately on the score sheet.

Prediction: Chelsea (4-0 on agg).

Roma vs. Lyon

Roma have been doing OK on Serie A, but Lyon have been outstanding…

Prediction: Lyon (3-1 on agg).

Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich

If Cappello’s guys get focus, Van Nistelrooy finds the net again, Cannavaro get as solid as he was on the World Cup, Beckham gets an opportunity to play and do his game, they definitely will have a chance, remember, Real is always strong in European competitions, doesn’t matter how they do at their local league. Oliver Kahn , Philipp Lahm, Mark van Bommel, Roy Makaay and Lukas Podolski performance will be key for Bayern, a very interesting match, Bayern are 4th on the German Bundesliga.

Prediction: Real Madrid (3-2 agg).

PSV Eindhoven vs. Arsenal

Arsenal are playing a awesome football those days. Thierry Henry and company should win this one with no problem. Jefferson Farfán and Arouna Kone are they guys to watch on PSV.

Prediction: Arsenal (5-2 on agg).

Top 10 for 2007 before Daytona!!!

1. KEVIN HARRICK has been in Dale Earnhardt’s shadow ever since he took the No. 3 car when the legend died in 2001, Fox Sports columnist Ryan McGee predicts this will be the year he emerges from that shadow and wins a title of his own.

2. TONY STEWART can compete with the best in any vehicle he’s chosen to drive. The Car of Tomorrow is yet another machine for Stewart to conquer and finish in the top spots of 2007.

3. MATT KENSETH has proven to be one of the most consistent drivers in Nextel Cup, but that does not mean there won’t be things he will have to battle to contend in 2007. Look for him to still finish among the best again!

4. JEFF GORDON has been part of the elite for years and there was a time when his record typing seventh title seemed all but assured. A few years later, we’re still waiting for No. 5 and chances are we we’ll keep on waiting in 2007.

5. DALE EARNHARDT JR. life off the track seems to be always full of distractions, be it his relationship with his stepmother, his father’s legacy or a documentary about his family, but look for him to put all those things aside and have another strong season in 2007.

6. CARL EDWARDS had an exciting back-flip-filled 2005 season, stumbled in 2006 spending much of the year fighting his way up the standings. This year looks to have much better things in store!

7. JIMMIE JOHNSON is the defending CHAMP! I would not go as far as saying a repeat is extremely likely, but his fans won’t like him being this low on the list. Too early to tell before Daytona, but a good season is definitely in store for him in ’07.

8. KASEY KAHNE owns the intermediate tracks and he obviously knows how to get into Victory Lane, but is he ready to be at the top of the pack?

9. KURT BUSCH/RYAN NEWMAN had a disappointing season in 2006, which led team owner Roger Penske to make big chances for 2007. Look for one of these guys to put last season behind them and get pushed into the elite 10!

10. JEFF BURTON use to be a perennial title contender. He seems to have woken from a deep slumber and has great chances to crack into the top 10.

Real missed chance to sign Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo

Martins, who coached Ronaldo for three years, from 1997 to 2000, has revealed how Real Madrid looked at him in 2003, before deciding not to sign him.

“I was in Madrid in 2003 to complete my training as a coach,” said Martins.

“By then the Real Madrid scouts had already followed Cristiano, and it appeared that they were already in contact with Sporting to sign him.”I recommended him to them. I do not know why they did not sign him.”

Martins also revealed Ronaldo had always wanted to do well in Spain.

“Cristiano has always said the same thing to me, that he wants to succeed in Spain, which he considers to be the best league in the world.

“And he is not going to stop until he achieves it.”

Of course, 2003 was the year Los Merengues pipped Barcelona to David Beckham, the Catalans pipped Manchester United to Ronaldinho, and the Red Devils picked up the Portuguese winger.
