Wichita State University – Given too much respect or not?

uni-wsu.bmp                                                                                  wichita-state.bmp

So the question that is one some peoples mind is if the Shockers are going to be able to play with the big boys or will they not live up to the sleeper card that they have been given by a few different sport writers. The Shockers to me should be able to hang with the rest of the teams this year, but this will be seen when they have to play some teams that either last year were strong or are always a tough strong team. Their first team that might give them a run for their money is George Mason whom they play on November 18th at George Mason. Then on November 25th they play at LSU whom as we all know can play some ball as they showed us last year. On December 2nd they will hit the road and play against the Orange Men of Syracuse, then on January 4th they will play at home against none other than the upset team of Bradley that last year left a lot and I mean a lot of people speechless. They will have the chance to play at Bradley on January 20th.

I think that if the Shockers can show up to those games and play hard and get some wins then they might start to prove the rest of the nation wrong that they do indeed belong with the elite teams of the nation. We will have to wait and see how they shooting and defense hold up when it comes down to the wire, will they step up to the plate and take control of their own destiny!

Bobby Knight was showing his old self again – Texas Tech Red Raiders

texas-tech.bmp                                                                                             texas-tech-red-raider.bmp

So it seems that good old Bobby Knight the hall of fame coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball program was back to his roots again Monday night when they were playing Gardner-Webb in Lubbock, Texas. Coach Knight became famous for his hard work with the Indiana Hoosiers whom he led to great success over the years. He was famous for his intense/fierce competiness both on and of the coart. We have all probaby seen his temper flip during games in the past when he has been seen throwing chairs onto the court while the game was being played.

Most of us whom follow men’s basketball all we starting to think that he was now a more relaxed coach but at the same time we were all just waiting for one of his outbusts to happen on TV again. Well we were all met with that thrill once again on Monday when during a Time Out call it seemed that Coach Knight slapped Michael Prince in the face, after the player walked of the court with his head hanging low. I have watched the video over and over today and I see nothing but a slap to a kids face, when Knight was asked about the incident he said he simply flipped him on his chin in order for his player to keep his head up.

Michael Prince was asked about the situation and he and his parents backed up Coach Knight’s story so that makes me wonder was there some kind of agreement met between the school officials and the Prince family? Or could it simply be that the player was to scared to step forward and really say what he thought happened, could it be that he was thinking if he made a statement against Knight that this would have an effect on his playing time and the way the other players would look at him. Well people that is not for me to say I can only speculate about the whole situation. Personally I don’t think that we will ever find out, but what we can do it make a judgement call after watching the situation.

NCAA Basketball Sleeper Teams – 2006-2007 Season

ncaa-hoops-logo.bmp                                                                                        ncaa-logo.bmp

So for all you people out there that are College Hoops fans, well what better news than that the season started yesterday and once again Vermont had some skills to show us. Maryland as always looked solid even though the team they played against was weak, today they will get the chance to show what they are made of when they face of against Vermont. After doing some searching and looking around I wanted to take the opportunity to talk about some of the teams that I think are not being given the respect they deserve; I would like to classify them as the Sleepers!

gatech-logo.bmp The YellowJackets from Atlanta, Georgia had a horrible season finnishing with a losing record, they finnished 4-12 in the ACC and had two losses that not many can explain even to this date, they lost both to Illinois-Chicago and Air Force. So are they ready this year to come back with all guns blazing I think so, why well they have 6 of their top seven scores from last year returning so that will at least provide a lot of confidence within the team and also leadership. We all know how tough the ACC is when it comes to basketball so it will be interesting to see how the YellowJackets do this year.

nevada-lgo.bmpThe Wolfpack returns a squad that looked solid last year and with all five of their starters returning to play again. I would like to say that it is safe to say that this team by no means is going to be an easy push over. Their star player has to be two time WAC player of the year Nick Fazekas, whom not only can score on the inside but also has talent from outside shooting. Fazekas opted out of the NBA draft this summer even though he had a season that most college players would dream of, maybe he simply thought it was not the time and he wanted to try and lead the WolfPack to something great.

southerill-logo.bmpThe Salukis return 8 players from a  team that one 22 times last season and played in its with consecutive NCAA tournament. Last season this team held its opponents to only 56.5 points which was the 4th best in the nation, now that speaks highly of how strong their defense is. If they come even close to this type of defense again then we can for sure expect them to have another season with a high amount of wins.

wichita-state.bmpThe Shockers of Wichita State University are returning all but one starter from the team that last year advanced to the sweet 16. The only way this team will Shock teams around the nation is if they are able to find someway of replacing Paul Miller the MVC player of the year. But maybe one of the returners will step up to the plate or whom knows if a Freshmen will come in a take on that task.

Oklahoma State University – Mens Cowboy Golf Team Wins Hooters Match Play

osu.bmp This year the Hooters match play championship was played in Fort Worth, Texas. As always it was a strong field since most of the top teams in the nation play in this event, its a good switch up from playing stroke play and actually getting the chance to play match play. The cowboys were ranked 4th out of the sixteen teams that were taking part in this years event, the reason why the cowboys were not ranked higher was due to their starting line up not including their two all americans Pablo Martin and Jonathan Moore. These two players were both in South Africa playing in the World Cup Team championship. Pablo was representing Spain and Jonathan was playing for the United States of America. Pablo managed to finish tied for seventh with rounds of 73-71-70-67.

During the morning round of day one OSU had to face 13th seeded North Carolina State, the wolfpack was not much match for the cowboys, whom won 4-1. During the afternoon match of day one, OSU was to face 5th seeded Clemson whom they swept away with a comanding 5-0 win. For their semi final match OSU had to face top seeded Florida this match could have gone either way, but OSU pulled of the win with a score of 3-1-1. To the surprise of most players and coaches the final was to be OSU against 11th seeded Lamar University whom was missing probably their top player – Dawie Van Der Walt whom was playing for his country South Africa in the same event as Pablo and Jonathan.

The cowboys pulled of the win with a final score of 3-2 over the Cardinals, OSU was solid throughout the whole event winning at total of 15 out of their individual 20 matches. This was the second time that they had won this event, they also pulled of the win in 2004, this was the last event for the cowboys for the Fall semester and they will start back up in Spring on Feb 7th at the Waikola Intercollegiate.
