The golf legend Bryon Nelson died at 94 on September 26th, 2006. Known as golf’s elegant ‘Lord Bryon’ whos eleven consecutive victories in 1945 stand and probably always will as one of sports most amazing records. Not only did he manage to win eleven consecutive tournaments that year he was able to rack up a total of 18 wins for the year, something that no golf has ever even come close to dreaming of. Lord Bryon was known for his graceful swing and his gentle manner, I think if we say that he had the greatest year in professional golf history in 1945 with his 18 wins, I think that falls short there are no words that I can think of that will describe that year other than one of a kind.
His legend will always live on thanks to the PGATOUR that every years hosts the EDS Bryon Nelson Championship, that is played every May at the Four Seasons Resort and Club of Las Colinas of Irwing, Texas. This tournament always brings out a strong field not for the prize money, but simply to pay respect to one of the all time greats in golf history. That will no longer be the case next year, because Lord Byron won’t be sitting at the 18th green watching the players finnish, but one has to wonder if next years tournament will draw an ever stronger field to show their respect for a legend!
