Southern Miss announced this week that the beginning of the season  will be against South Carolina. The first game of the season will be national televised on ESPN and is going to take place this Thursday September 2nd, 2010.“This is a huge opportunity to be the first nationally televised game of the year that signals the start of the 2010 season,” Southern Miss athletic director Richard Giannini said in a statement released by the school. “This game generates a tremendous amount of attention and it gives us a chance to showcase our football program to the nation.”

Southern Miss also moved its scheduled 2010 game with LSU to 2011 to accommodate the South Carolina game. Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora was asked about the game following Wednesday’s practice and said he’s excited, but preoccupied with this week’s game against Virginia.  “That game is a long way away and not something I have to worry about right now,” Fedora said. “But I think it is a great thing for our team and university. I am excited about it and I think the exposure will be a great thing for us when it happens.”

After a day of rest, Southern Miss returned to the practice field Tuesday, getting in a two-hour workout in shoulder pads and shorts at the Joe P.P. Park facility in Hattiesburg. “We had a really good day,” Golden Eagles coach Larry Fedora said. “Obviously, everything is South Carolina at this point. Guys understand their focus and they are locked in and they know what has to be done.”
