US OPEN AUG. 27-SEPT. 9

As the nights get cooler the action is heating up in the world of tennis. The US Open, live from Flushing, New York, has begun. The excitement will kick off immediately for fans of US tennis because two of their biggest champion hopes will start play today. Sisters Venus and Serena Williams take on competitors in the first round immediately following a ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the US Open victory of one of their hero’s, Athena Gibson. Serena is looking to have her season end on a good note, after winning the Australian Open this year. She is currently ranked 8th in the WTA rankings, but has made nearly 1.8 million dollars in prize money. Her sister Venus, ranked 13 in the WTA rankings, has not won a major this year, but did win the tournament “The Championships.” Where ever the Williams’ sisters go they always draw a crowd, and this year will be no different. Serena is seeded 8th and Venus 12th in this years tournaments.

However, defending US Open women’s champion Maria Sharapova won’t go down without a fight. Sharapova is seeded second, but has not one a major this year. Despite not winning a tournament this year, she has played well. She was the runner-up at the Australian open, semi-finals at Roland Garros, and made the fourth round at Wimbledon. The Russian hopes she can win her second major in two years with a repeat victory at the US Open.

Seeded number one in the women’s bracket is Justine Henin. Henin has already won at Roland Garros this year, and finished in the semi-finals at Wimbledon. She did not compete at the Australian Open. Last year Henin was runner up to Sharapova, and would love a chance to gain a rematch. Henin is currently in the mist of enjoying a career resurgence, which sees her as the number one ranked player in the world.

The men’s side of the draw looks to be a two horse race, but it’s one of the most exciting rivalries in sports today, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Federer has been an absolute beast the last two plus years. Going back to Wimbledon of 2005, Federer has won seven of nine major tournaments, including the last three US Opens. Needless to say Federer is the odds on favorite to take home the championship. But, he has had some competition of late by the name of Rafael Nadal. Nadal has won this year at Roland Garros, and was runner up at Wimbledon. If it wasn’t for Federer, it would probably be Nadal that would be winning all of these tournaments.

Other players that American’s will have an eye on our James Blake and Andy Roddick. They both have been on the cusp of winning a major tournament for quite a while and their American crowd may be enough to push them to the promise land.

If this isn’t enough excitement for you, then remember this, upset always do happen. For example 18th seeded Marcos Baghdatis just lost to Max Mirnyi in the first round. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!
