So after the first 3 games of day one action here in Madison Square Garden we have seen a little of what has come to be expected. Lots of good basketball so far and as always teams have showed up and others have buckled under the pressure. For the first game we had DePaul playing against the UConn Huskies and it was not much of a game to be honest and I don`t that many thought that DePaul could do anything against the 19th Ranked Huskies. |
DePaul had only won one conference play out of eighteen games and that lonely win came on February 17th when they beat Providence 79-76. UConn was an 14.5 point favorite and could maybe have been more against a much weaker DePaul and Huskies won the game 97-71. Now the Huskies will face the Georgetown Hoyas in the second round which will be played Wednesday at Noon, the two teams have played just once this regular season and UConn came out on top in that meeting that took place on February 16th with a final score of 78-70.
For the second game today we had Rutgers vs. Seton Hall these two teams had faced each other twice and both teams had won a game each and today the Pirates of Seton Hall were a 4.5 point favorite. Though Seton Hall was favorite to win everyone knew that this was going to be a close game that either team could win. In the end it was Rutgers that won 76-70 after they went to overtime. Rutgers will now play national ranked number 18 St. Johns at 2.25pm. Last time they played Rutgers won 58-56 but look for St. Johns to come out and try and avenge that lose earlier in the regular season and they have the advantage after being able to have rested today.
The third game produced an upset when South Florida beat Villanova 70-69 and the Wildcats were favorite by 9.5 points to win. It should have been an easy game for the Wildcats especially since they were leading at half time 49-33 they looked solid and it looked like the Villanova that one has become used to seeing. But something happened at half time because the Wildcats that played the second half did not look like the team from the first half they only managed to score a sad 20 points and let South Florida win the game it was something to be seen. Now South Florida will take on Cincinnati at 7pm, the last time these teams played the Bearcats of Cincinnati won it 74-66.
The last game of day one we had Providence taking on Marquette, in this game the Golden Eagles were a 7 point favorite over the Friars and it was really not a close game; the Golden Eagles took the lead and never looked back. Marquette was up 46-33 at half time and the second half was much of the same with Marquette winning the second half 41-33 and therefore winning the game 87-66. Marquette will now play West Virginia at 9.25pm and the last time that these two teams met Marquette came out on top 79-74. Lets wait and see if the Mountaineers are going to try and put on a run and show that last year them winning it all was no fluke.
