Center Dwight Howard is the centerpiece of the franchise, the front-court terror who can dominate games at both ends.
Yet it’s the three-point frenzy that really is making the Magic special now.
In a victory Sunday in San Antonio, the Magic made 14 of 22 three-pointers. They followed it Tuesday by hitting an NBA-record 23 three-pointers on 37 attempts.
The Magic had 13 three-pointers in the first half, getting at least one from seven different players before intermission. Before it was over, nine different players had hit a three-pointer.
They are second this season to the New York Knicks for the most three-pointers made and attempted per game. Yet the Knicks won’t get noticed because of another disappointing season. The Magic are hoping to use that long-range shooting to provide the balance to Dwight Howard that could take them deep into the playoffs
Lamar Odom returned to action Tuesday night in Houston after missing a week with a bone bruise on his right knee. The Lakers needed more players after fellow ball-handler Sasha Vujacic suffered a sore back and had to sit out.
So Odom declared himself “ready to go” after a practice and a shoot-around, something Lakers coach Phil Jackson clearly was hoping would happen.
“It’s up to his capabilities,” Jackson said, leaving the decision to Odom.
Odom was hurt on Jan. 6 when he fouled New Orleans’ Chris Paul as Paul was driving the lane. The Lakers lost that game but won the next three in tight fashion without Odom: at Golden State and against Indiana and Miami at home.
I would say that the Orlando Magic have a big shot on winning this game to the Lakers.
